As I arrived for the Field Studies workshop at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design on 16 April, the legendary Akio Suzuki was preparing for his talk. Donning his customary tight-fitting hat and with his grey beard, he almost looked like one of Hayao Miyazaki’s avuncular and wise protagonists.

The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra is making its Cadogan Hall debut in the Hall’s tenth anniversary year on Monday, 17 March 2014. Japan’s oldest and largest orchestra is conducted by Eiji Oue, a Japanese conductor known for his original and powerful interpretations, and this evening’s concert sees the orchestra perform a mixture of traditional Japanese and Western music.

At 7:30pm on Tuesday 7 January 2014 The Concordia Foundation, Gillian Humphreys present East Meets West: Beyond the Horizon at St Martin in the Fields. Satoko Fukuda, creative director with the Concordia International Ensemble, dancers and musicians, including shamisen player Hibiki Ichikawa who has played at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, will play a variety of music including Japanese folk songs, Vivaldi, Piazzolla, Vaughan Williams and Roxanna Panufnik.
