Overseas Undergraduate Research Internship (University of Victoria Canada) - Second World War Nikkei Persecution around the Pacific

The Past Wrongs Future Choices global research network is seeking one undergraduate student research internship from selected UK universities to work with their digital archives and develop public history pieces focussing on the mass internment/incarceration, uprooting, and dispossession by Allied settler nations around the Pacific of their Nikkei populations during the Second World War.

Headline points of the offer include:

• 12 week residence at the University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) between May and October 2026
• transport, accommodation, and living stipend fully paid
• full training in project-specific digital archiving skills
• development of research outputs using the skills you’ll be trained in.

Criteria for eligibility to apply:
Other criteria include:

• you must be a BA student going either into your 2nd or 3rd year of study
• you do not need Japanese or Portuguese language skills, but should have deep and demonstrable interest in developing your scholarly history skills, public history/heritage skills in translating scholarly findings. You should also be able to show demonstrable interest and/or background in the Japanese diaspora and/or Nikkei history

Application Process: You’ll need to produce a full online application which is quite an involved process. It requires the development of a full academic CV, statements describing your achievements, qualifications, research you’ve undertaken, all of which should speak directly to why you are interested in and are ideal for this project.
