Booking closedThe ongoing war between Israel and Hamas represents a new shock for international geopolitical relations, coming less than two years after the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war. Hamas’s attacks and Israel’s response have generated various reactions from governments around the world. Global geopolitical divisions could widen and accelerate further as a consequence of this conflict.
In this webinar moderated by Lawrence Freedman, Japan’s former Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Hitoshi Tanaka discussed Japan’s perspective on and response to the Israel-Hamas conflict. He analysed the potential impact on the international order and Japan’s position in it. Additionally, he shared his opinions about Japan’s role as this year’s G7 host and innovative diplomatic approaches that could be taken towards recent global conflicts.

Hitoshi Tanaka
Hitoshi Tanaka is the special advisor of the Institute for International Strategy at the Japan Research Institute, Ltd. Since 2010 and a senior fellow at the nongovernmental Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE). Prior to joining JCIE in September 2005, he served for three years as Japan’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs where he was a top advisor to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on a broad range of issues. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo. He is a graduate of Kyoto University and Oxford University (P.P.E).

Lawrence Freedman (moderator)
Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman is Emeritus Professor of War Studies, King’s College London. He was Professor of War Studies from 1982 to 2014 and Vice-Principal from 2003 to 2013. He was educated at Whitley Bay Grammar School and the Universities of Manchester, York and Oxford. Before joining King’s he held research appointments at Nuffield College Oxford, the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Royal Institute of International Affairs. Elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1995 and awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 1996, he was appointed Official Historian of the Falklands Campaign in 1997. In 2003, he was awarded the KCMG (Knight Commander of St Michael and St George). In June 2009 he was appointed to serve as a member of the official inquiry into Britain and the 2003 Iraq War.
