Christopher Everett CBE and former Director General of the Foundation, 20.6.1933 to 16.11.2024

All of us at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation have been deeply saddened to hear of the death of Christopher Everett CBE, our first Director-General (1990-2000).

Having previously been Headmaster of Tonbridge School, Christopher faced a very different challenge at the Daiwa Foundation, where he had to start pretty much from scratch, hiring staff and designing programmes to realise the ambitions of its founder, Yoshitoki Chino KBE, Chairman of Daiwa Securities. It was Christopher who found our wonderful building overlooking Regent’s Park, purchasing the lease for a remarkably low price during the early 1990s property collapse. The key programme he designed, the Daiwa Scholarships, remains the flagship programme of the Foundation today, with over 200 scholars having now benefitted from the intensive exposure to Japan that it provides, and many of them going on to become leaders in their various fields, just as Christopher envisaged.

He was not only a highly effective manager, but also an unfailingly charming and delightful man, much loved by all who worked with him. He maintained his involvement with the Foundation after his retirement, including as a Trustee from 2005 to 2013. His successors Marie Conte-Helm OBE and I found him the perfect predecessor – he never minded if we took the Foundation in new directions, but was always highly supportive and ready to offer us the benefits of his experience and wisdom whenever we needed it.
