Booking closedMore than a year into Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, there is no clear sign yet of the end of the conflict. The war has led to a series of far-reaching consequences, including escalating nuclear threats, increasing tensions between the US and China, and a rethink of the security strategy for the Indo-Pacific region.
In this webinar, Dr Michito Tsuruoka of Keio University analysed the war in Ukraine from a Japanese perspective. He explored what the war means for Japan, the Japanese government’s response, its commitment to the rules-based international order with Japan holding the G7 Presidency this year, and the potential impact on Japan’s relations with the US and Europe.

About the contributor
Dr Michito Tsuruoka
Dr Michito Tsuruoka is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Policy Management at Keio University. He is currently on sabbatical as a Visiting Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre of Australian National University in Canberra. Prior to joining Keio in 2017, he was a Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), Ministry of Defense from 2009. He is concurrently a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy, Brussels School of Governance. During his tenure at NIDS, Dr Tsuruoka was seconded to the Ministry of Defense as a Deputy Director of the International Policy Division, Bureau of Defense Policy (2012-2013), where he was in charge of multilateral security and defence cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and spent one year as a Visiting Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies in London (2013-2014). He also served as an Adviser to NATO at the Embassy of Japan in Belgium (2005-2008). Dr Tsuruoka earned his PhD (in War Studies) from King’s College London. His areas of expertise include international security, contemporary European politics, European foreign policy (Europe-Japan/Asia relations) and Japan’s foreign, security and defence policy. His most recent monograph The Invasion of Ukraine as a European War was published by Shinchosha in February 2023 (in Japanese).
