Application procedure

The deadline for Daiwa Scholarships 2027 is 3 December 2026.

Daiwa Scholarships 2027 will begin in late July/August 2027 and will finish in late March 2029.

  • The first-round interviews are scheduled to take place in February 2027 (most likely in the week of 8 February).
  • Those who pass the first-round interview will be requested to take the Modern Language Aptitude Test online shortly after the first-round interviews.
  • The final interviews, conducted by a panel made up of our trustees , are scheduled for 15 and 16 March 2027 (subject to change)

Up to eight Scholars will be selected in 2027.

The selected Daiwa Scholars will undertake a one-month intensive, residential Japanese language course in the UK from late July/early August 2027 and will move to Japan for the rest of the Scholarship in early to mid September. There is also a short orientation on arrival in Tokyo.

Use of AI

While we cannot prohibit the use of AI, we ask that you declare any use of it in the application form.

We also ask that your referees avoid using AI when writing reference letters.

Application Forms

Reference letters should be emailed to Scholarships@dajf.org.uk

Ideally the references should be typed on letterheaded paper – where possible – and emailed as PDF attachments. The applicant should not be copied in. We ask that your discourage use of AI by your referees.

Deadline

The deadline for applications and submission of three reference letters for the 2027 programme is also Thursday 3 December 2026. If candidates’ circumstances change (for instance, change address) after submitting an application, please let us know. Candidates shortlisted for the first-round interviews will be contacted from mid-January 2027 onwards.

The preliminary screening of application forms will take place during January 2027. Candidates will be notified (towards the end of January 2027) whether or not they are invited to a Stage 1 interview (held in the week of 8 February 2027).

Stage 2

Candidates who successfully pass Stage 1 will be invited to take the language aptitude test online and to attend a final interview with our Trustees.

Stage 3

The final shortlist of candidates will be interviewed by the Trustees  on 15 and 16 March 2027. Candidates will be notified of the final outcome soon afterwards.
