Healthcare Provision and Management in the UK and Japan
This fifth seminar in the 2011 series considered the issues surrounding healthcare provision and management in the UK and Japan. This is a highly topical area for debate in the UK as spending cuts and healthcare reforms focus attention on the ways in which the NHS must adapt to changing times. The Japanese health service is facing similar difficulties as Japan’s ageing population and low birth rate impact upon healthcare needs and provision.

The Future of the Sino-Japanese Relationship
This lecture, part of a UK lecture tour organised by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, looked to the future in assessing the impact and importance of the implicit rivalry between these two major powers with longstanding historical and cultural ties.

The Japanese in War and Peace, 1942-48
In the period 1946-48, as a member of the British Occupation Force in Japan, which formed part of the Allied Occupation following the Asia-Pacific War of 1941-45, Ian Nish collected a number of documents which throw light on the attitudes of the Japanese people in the latter part of the war and the equally critical first two years of the peace.

(H)allo-poiesis by Kounosuke Kawakami
Often painting abandoned buildings eroded by nature, Kounosuke Kawakami chooses industrial architecture and resort towns as symbols for the interaction between the natural world and humans. In (H)allo-poiesis, Kawakami uses a new visual language to explore his interest in the relationship between man and the natural world.

'Kodomo no hi' Charity Recital by Lisa Ueda (violin)
The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation hosted a Recital by Ms Lisa Ueda, in aid of the children who have been orphaned or made homeless by the Tohoku disaster. Minister Noda of the Japanese Embassy gave a note of thanks at the event. Thank you for your kind support. Lisa’s efforts raised £3,009, which has been donated to Save the Children Japan.

Challenges for Post-Crisis Japan
The 11 March earthquake and tsunami have produced a human tragedy, to which the Japanese have responded with stoicism. However, this is also an economic crisis, made more complicated by the damage done to the Fukushima nuclear complex and disruption to other east coast facilities, including nuclear and thermal plants.

Charity Concert in Aid of the Tohoku Earthquake & Tsunami Relief Effort
The Toki Quartet concert was attended by 114 people. Their efforts raised £2,383 which has been donated to the Japan Tsunami Appeal by the British Red Cross. Thank you for your kind support.
