The conflict in Ukraine has had an immediate and significant impact on global energy supply, leading to energy price increases for consumers, and threatening the energy security strategy of a number of countries and regions. In this webinar Professor Benjamin McLellan and Professor Molly Scott Cato discussed the current energy situation in the UK and Japan, the impact of the Ukraine crisis on prices, and the future for renewable energy, considering how energy efficiency can be improved, and how to achieve the target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Three women by Maria Farrar

Maria Farrar is an artist based in London. Born in the Philippines in 1988, she was brought up in Shimonoseki, Japan, until the age of 15, when she moved to the UK. In this talk, Maria told the stories of three Filipina women who have left their country for work or through marriage. The three stories reflected the effects of separation, the sacrifices first-generation immigrant communities make, and how, despite the difficulty of being separated from your larger family circle, building new families in a new country is a beautiful thing.

Private View: Somewhat Infrequently by Daisuke Kosugi

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation is pleased to present Daisuke Kosugi’s first UK solo exhibition Somewhat Infrequently, showcasing Kosugi’s two latest works, A False Weight (2019) and All that goes before forget (2021). Kosugi utilises video as his primary medium to produce work that focuses on dislocated subjectivity in a normalised social milieu. He uses moving images to distort our sense of time – fixed, universal, always marching forward – and make us question what we thought we knew about our memory. While the world tries to advance and grow, desperately trying to keep up with the pace of change, Kosugi’s works make us pause and allow us to experiment with different relations and connections to ourselves and others.

Western Lives and Letters in Nineteenth-Century China and Japan

This talk celebrated the launch of a new book, Chronicling Westerners in Nineteenth-Century East Asia, in which scholars from the UK, US, Europe, and Japan present intimate, engaging, and largely untold portraits of Western lives and livelihoods in the world of the treaty ports. It examines how Westerners ‘chronicled’ their overseas lives in personal letters, diplomatic dispatches, business records, and academic papers. By utilizing these rich but often overlooked sources, Chronicling Westerners in Nineteenth-Century East Asia presents new insights into the pace and challenges of daily life, especially in the Japanese treaty ports of Nagasaki and Yokohama but also in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The Ukraine War and Global Cybersecurity

The Russia-Ukraine war has revealed the increasing relevance of cyber warfare and the potential impact that cyber threats might have globally. Cyberspace is regarded as one of the domains of hybrid warfare, in which digital attacks are used against an enemy state, disrupting vital computer systems. This domain is more accessible than others, enabling volunteers around the world actively to join a war. In this webinar, experts explained the present situation for global cyber threats and their challenges to cybersecurity, as well as potential future scenarios for cyberspace, and recommendations to increase safety.

Hand and Eye: Graham Ellard and Stephen Johnstone present their short film 'Pattern' and discuss the hand-made in the work of Asako Shiroki.

As a parallel to Asako Shiroki’s exhibition in the gallery, Graham Ellard and Stephen Johnstone presented their film ‘Pattern’, which features Shiroki at work. Ellard and Johnstone discussed their film through its overlaps and echoes with Shiroki’s exhibition; their shared interest in the hand, material processes, craft, making, and the particular form of experience generated in close and intent attention to detail – as well as how these projects have been imprinted by the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic.

EVENT CANCELLED: Pictorialist Photography: Soichi Sunami and his Issei Contemporaries

David F. Martin will discuss the work and international achievements of Issei photographers active in Seattle, Washington, in the early 20th century. He will focus primarily on Soichi Sunami (1885-1971) whose artistic career began in Seattle and continued after he relocated to New York where he became the chief photographer for the Museum of Modern Art. Sunami’s main interest was dance photography and his subjects included Martha Graham, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn and other iconic dancers of the period.

Nuclear Threats after the Ukraine War

If it escalates, the Ukraine war could lead to a new wave of nuclear weapons proliferation and threats globally. Soon after the beginning of the war, in an attempt to dissuade the West from intervening further in the conflict, Russia asserted its right to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, prompting Europe to re-think its security architecture. These security concerns also extend to the Asian region. Could these concerns trigger a new nuclear arms race?  In this webinar, the experts discussed current challenges in the international security arena, and their implications for future global security architecture and the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

日英の児童虐待対応の比較

本ウェビナーでは、日英の児童虐待対応の比較、英国のチャリティ組織の役割、児童保護における司法の役割等についてお話しました。日本とイギリスにおける児童福祉に司法がどのように関与するか，イギリスの法定ガイダンスで紹介されている裁判所の命令（order）と，日本の児童福祉法で認められている家庭裁判所の審判を，児童相談所の代理人として家庭裁判所に審判申立てをしてきた経験を踏まえながら対比し，日本とイギリスのそれぞれの児童福祉における司法の機能・役割について検討し、今後の日本の児童福祉に期待されることを一緒に考える機会となりました。

The war in Ukraine and the impact on the international order

Over a month has passed since the start of the Ukraine war, an event that has shocked the international community and will have global consequences. Might a prolonged war bring us to the brink of World War III? In this webinar, we discussed the causes of the conflict, as well as its future implications for the international order. We also analysed the role of global actors such as the US, Europe, Japan and China, and talked about the impact the war is having around the world, with a particular focus on Asia.
