Join us for a private view of the group exhibition, ひろしま/hiroshima. To mark the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, this exhibition of work by three acclaimed Japanese women artists shifts its gaze to another side of the city and its people – the changes, the things that remain, the personal and genuine memories – the everyday, the ordinary and contemporary society. This exhibition encourages us to see Hiroshima differently, as a city that was traumatised, once again teeming with life.

The doors will open at 5:00 pm. Guests who have booked in advance are welcome to visit the gallery any time between 5:00 pm and 7:45 pm.

Amid intensifying conflicts around the world, some of them associated with nuclear threats, Hiroshima’s experience as history’s first nuclear target is increasingly remembered and highlighted. The city’s image both as a site of war devastation and as a symbol of peace has been emphasised and selectively used for political purposes and in attempts to shape narratives, whilst the everyday reality of its inhabitants and their personal memories have largely been overlooked. To mark the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, this exhibition of work by three acclaimed Japanese women artists shifts its gaze to another side of the city and its people – the changes, the things that remain, the personal and genuine memories – the everyday, the ordinary, and contemporary society. This exhibition encourages us to see Hiroshima differently, as a city that was traumatised, once again teeming with life.

In this webinar, Tomoko Yoneda was in conversation with Melanie Pocock, curator of her exhibition, discussing her artistic practice and the photography she has produced over the past thirty years, including the seminal series Scene, that revisits sites of historic conflict and unspoken trauma, and DMZ, in which the artist captures the quiet beauty of native flora in Korea’s demilitarised zone, as well as her series Between Visible and Invisible.

Private View: Faultlines by Tomoko Yoneda

Join us for a private view of Tomoko Yoneda’s solo exhibition in the UK at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation. This exhibition presents a selection of photography produced over the past thirty years by London-based Japanese artist Tomoko Yoneda. Among the works presented are photographs from her seminal series Scene that revisit sites of historic conflict and unspoken trauma, and DMZ, in which the artist captures the quiet beauty of native flora in Korea’s demilitarized zone. A display in the ground floor library features silver gelatin prints from her series Between Visible and Invisible, focusing on texts of personal significance to major historical and intellectual figures of the 20th century.

This exhibition presents photography and film made over the past thirty years by London-based Japanese artist Tomoko Yoneda.

The result of detailed research and careful observation, Yoneda’s quietly affecting work traces the enduring effects of war and natural disaster. Her mysterious images and their accompanying captions bring to the surface hidden histories in landscapes, people and archives. Often focusing on the fallouts of Japanese imperialism and the Second World War, they highlight the humanity at the heart of global conflicts, casting light on unknown protagonists, the resilience of survivors, and the ambivalence of younger generations facing their legacy.

To mark the closing of the exhibition ‘transiənt (“transient”)’ by Sayuri Ichida at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, we are delighted to host an artist talk, ‘Sayuri Ichida in conversation with Fiona Rogers’. In this event, Ichida will introduce her works, particularly highlighting key aspects of her production, such as her early life, artistic motivations, and long-lasting relationship with photography across Tokyo, New York, London, and Margate. A discussion moderated by Fiona Rogers will follow the presentation, framing her practice in a broader context, including the two series featured in the exhibition: ‘Absentee’ (2020-2021) and ‘Ctrl Shift + J’ (2023-), through which she explored the ephemeral nature of life and existence.

Private View: transiənt by Sayuri Ichida

Join us for a private view of Sayuri Ichida’s first solo exhibition in the UK, transiənt (‘transient’) at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation. This event will offer a first opportunity to explore selected works from Ichida’s two photography series, ‘Absentee’ (2020-2021) and ‘Ctrl Shift + J’ (2023-). Drawing from personal experiences of loss, grief, and life abroad, Ichida’s works explore the ephemeral nature of life and existence. Through these series, she revisits and processes the past, reflecting on the complex ways we experience time – distortion, repetition, and regression – when memories intertwine with the present. Showcasing over 30 pieces, the exhibition invites viewers to immerse themselves in her delicately processed monochromatic images that integrate her emotional landscapes across multiple temporal dimensions.

Noguchi Rika in conversation with
Jonathan Watkins

In this event, Noguchi Rika will be in conversation with Jonathan Watkins, curator of her exhibition Life on Planet Earth, putting the work shown into the context of her practice overall. In particular, they will discuss the representation of alienness, a theme that has been evident in Noguchi’s work since she emerged as an artist in the 1990s. She encourages us to see the visible world as if for the first time – with a sense of wonder – while conveying a kind of melancholy derived from an understanding that human perception is strictly limited. In this vein, recent photographs and films of insects and birds exemplify a proposition that is as aesthetic as it is philosophical.
