The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation is delighted to introduce several works by the Ainu artist Kohei Fujito, which are on display in the Foundation’s Regency Room. Fujito, an emerging Ainu artist from the young generation based in Akan, Hokkaidō, presents a small selection of his artworks ranging from a knife and sheath to phone cases and sunglasses. The display will be on until the 14th of February 2020.

Be drawn into the faraway world of The Women of Ishikawa: a selection of strange, hilarious, and tragic folk stories from the mountains of Ishikawa, brought over from Japan and performed by Doubtful Sound. The show is in a mix of Kaga-ben (the local dialect) and English, and the stories are sprinkled with traditional folk songs from the SOAS Min’yo Group.

During London Craft Week, Made in Japan Project and The Creation of Japan will hold a one-day crafting exhibition at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation. The exhibition highlights the variety of Japanese materials and techniques used to create hand-crafted pieces. Taiyo Nakazato, 18th generation potter of Hirado Kosho Danemon Kiln, will demonstrate the techniques of Mikawachi ceramics, traditional porcelain with a 400 year old history.

In this special event, Hisashi Yoshida, Director of a Shinto ceremony company, discussed the origins of ‘Shouzoku’, garments worn by Shinto priests, which was followed by a musical performance by Tokiko Ihara, a Shō flute player, and a display of Shouzoku garments. Outside of Japan, not much is known about this element of Japanese society, and in his talk, Yoshida spread Japanese culture and knowledge.

In March 2017 British contemporary artist Amanda Chambers travelled to Japan for a one-month residency in ceramics at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Shiga Prefecture, to develop her growing interest in clay. This talk, illustrated with images from the residency, highlighted some of the key themes that emerged in Chambers’ works, and it was accompanied by a temporary exhibition of selected ceramic works which were the result of her stay.

On Saturday 16 September (2:30-4pm), the artists of “Decorative but Calm – Japanese Artists and Modern Craftsmanship” invited us to join them for an afternoon of demonstration of their techniques. On this day, the exhibition was open from 10am to 5pm.

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and QUEENS, indoor ice rink, was delighted to offer this unique figure skating workshop with four-time Japanese National Champion and three-time World Championship medallist Fumie Suguri. She shared her skating brilliance with adults and children, from beginners to advanced skaters.

Takaya Fujii’s ikebana has a significance far beyond its role as just art. It bridges Japanese Buddhist and Shintoistic principles of life and it reminds us that the impermanent beauty of nature should be honoured. We were delighted to host this special exhibition of his work and artist talk.

Photography captures images of the world through the use of light. Could the shadows also create a visual experience – one that does not appear under the light? This workshop invites you to take photos in central London at night using a unique and somewhat unorthodox method. Workshop participants are asked to bring their own digital camera that has a flash function.
