Voices from the Contemporary Japanese Feminist Movement

Voices from the Contemporary Japanese Feminist Movement introduces six influential activists from Japan’s contemporary feminist movement. The authors, both based in universities in Australia, wrote the book to fill a gap in Australia-based Japanese studies, which has overly focussed on research in cultural studies and linguistics to the exclusion of structural analyses of the status of women in Japan. For this book launch, the authors described Japan’s grassroots feminist movement based on testimonies they gathered, generating insights about some of the most serious problems faced by women and girls in Japan, as well as comparing the approaches of Japanese activists with those of the global feminist movement.

Art x Ecology x Solidarity

Through the social media era, and through the recent lockdown, we have had a personal and yet collective experience, calling into focus the human needs for solidarity and interdependence. Unfortunately the causes of solidarity are often found in situations of hardship such as inequality, natural disasters and war. Artistic solidarity movements bring a novel dimension by introducing different perspectives, to raise questions. Art may have the strength to affect a range of concerns, but could solidarity itself be an art form? In this talk moderated by Mark Rappolt, we were pleased to be joined by two speakers, Mirwan Andan (who, with ruangrupa, was part of the artistic team of documenta fifteen) and interdisciplinary artist Hikaru Fujii.

EVENT CANCELLED - Dan Snow in conversation with Setsuko Thurlow: The Threat of Nuclear Weapons

77 years ago, on August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima, killing over 140,000 people. Three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped over the city of Nagasaki. In this webinar moderated by Dan Snow, Setsuko Thurlow, one of the survivors of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, will share her experiences of the bomb and talk about her international activity promoting nuclear disarmament. She will share her message for future generations in the present context of escalating rhetoric, and rising risks that nuclear weapons will be used again.

From Hiroshima and Minamata to today Socially engaged practices in post-war Japan

In this talk, Dr Justin Jesty and Namiko Kunimoto will discuss how artists like Iri Maruki and Toshiko Akamatsu and Noriaki Tsuchimoto engaged critically with the realities of post-war Japan and what their works do for us in the present. They acknowledged public fears, vulnerabilities and anxieties about people’s bodies being contaminated by invisible threats, and tried to keep the public focussed on the issues they addressed. This talk will be an occasion for us to consider the work of those artists and connect it to contemporary issues.

The Ukraine War and Global Cybersecurity

The Russia-Ukraine war has revealed the increasing relevance of cyber warfare and the potential impact that cyber threats might have globally. Cyberspace is regarded as one of the domains of hybrid warfare, in which digital attacks are used against an enemy state, disrupting vital computer systems. This domain is more accessible than others, enabling volunteers around the world actively to join a war. In this webinar, experts explained the present situation for global cyber threats and their challenges to cybersecurity, as well as potential future scenarios for cyberspace, and recommendations to increase safety.
