‘Nihonbashi’, a painting by Daiwa Scholarship alumnus and artist Carl Randall is being included in an exhibition at a museum in Tokyo this month. The acrylic on canvas painting (73 x 91cm, 2020) was originally commissioned by a private art collector in Japan, who asked Carl to make a painting featuring the ‘Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway’.

今年、沖縄が日本に復帰して５０年を迎えます。この半世紀を振り返り、沖縄の人にインタビューをしながら、日本本土とは異なった歴史や文化を持った沖縄の現状を様々な角度から考えます。
２回目のインタビューは、ひめゆり平和祈念資料館の普天間朝佳（ふてんま・ちょうけい）館長です。普天間さんは、１９８９年資料館の開館時に職員として採用され、２０１７年、戦後生まれとして初の館長に就任。沖縄戦、ひめゆり平和祈念資料館の開館から現在まで、そして未来への継承について伺いました。

2022年5月15日、沖縄が日本に復帰して50年を迎えます。この半世紀を振り返り、沖縄の人にインタビューをしながら、日本本土とは異なった歴史や文化を持った沖縄の現状を様々な角度から考えます。
1回目のインタビューは、佐喜眞美術館 館長の佐喜眞道夫（さきま・みちお）さんです。佐喜眞さんは、「沖縄戦の図」（沖縄戦で生き残った方々の証言に基づき描かれた絵画）を沖縄に残したいという画家の丸木位里（まるき・いり）・丸木俊（まるき・とし）夫妻の願いを聞き、米軍に接収されていた先祖伝来の土地を一部返還させ、美術館を設立。米軍基地に食い込むように設立された佐喜眞美術館は、様々な角度から沖縄について考える場所。佐喜眞館長に、沖縄復帰50年、米軍基地問題、アートの力について伺いました。
