Carl Randall's 'The Kokeshi Maker' on display until 11 July at Gallery 8

Daiwa Scholarships alumnus and artist Carl Randall has a new Japan-themed painting on show at the Hampstead Art Society Summer Exhibition until 11 July at Gallery 8 in Mayfair, central London. His oil painting The Kokeshi Maker is one of 90 artworks chosen from 3,252 worldwide submissions. The show also includes paintings by Winifred Nicholson

"Madam Butterfly Returns" at the Landor Theatre, Clapham, 4-22 November 2015

Madam Butterfly Returns is based on the story of Tomisaburo, the son of Cio-cio San and B. F. Pinkerton as told in the famous Puccini opera.  This new work is set 35 years later, and brings together Japanese art forms with western Opera to tell the story of Madam Butterfly’s son who is on the search for his father.

Visiting manga artist

World-famous manga artist (or mangaka – 漫画家) Akiko Hatsu (波津 ・彬子) visited London this week, giving a talk at the British Museum in the Japan Galleries.  Known for her work in the genre of shojo-manga (少女漫画), Akiko Hatsu was very influential in the development of the genre and also instrumental in coining the term Yaoi.

UK-Japan Cultural Heritage Research

Dr Ksenia Chmutina of Loughborough University’s School of Civil and Building Engineering received a £3,000 grant in September 2014 in order to head to Kyoto (京都). In conjunction with Professor Rohit Jigyasu and Professor Takeyuki Okubo from Ritsumeikan University’s Institute for Disaster Mitigation for Urban Cultural Heritage (R-DMUCH), joint research was conducted to look into new and innovative methods of preventing water-related damage to sites of historic and cultural significance, an issue seen in both York and Kyoto.

The Inaugural Daiwa Ichiban Lecture: Sir Paul Nurse on" Trust in Science"

The inaugural Daiwa Ichiban Lecture was held on Thursday 8^th October 2015, in collaboration with the British Embassy in Tokyo, at Ambassador Tim Hitchen’s Residence. Sir Paul Nurse, President of the Royal Society and a Nobel Prize laureate, spoke on the subject of “Trust in Science”. In his lecture, he stressed the enormous benefits that science has delivered to mankind, but argued that trust between scientists and the broader community is vital in maximising both the speed of scientific progress and its value to society.

UK – Japan Seminar on Disaster Risk Reduction at Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation on 23 October 2015

We have the pleasure to announce that the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS),  Tohoku University and the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR), University College London will be holding a bilateral symposium on Friday, 23 October 2015 at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation to reflect and expand UK-Japan collaborative efforts on Disaster Risk Reduction. The participants will include leading researchers of the universities of Cambridge, Bristol and Oxford Brookes, as well as UCL and Tohoku.
