Rest in Peace, Arthur Stockwin

In early January 2026, all of us at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation were saddened to hear of the death of Professor Arthur Stockwin. He was a towering figure in Japanese Studies in the UK, and a long-standing friend of the Daiwa Foundation, sometimes speaking at or moderating our events, but most memorably as a member of the interview panel assessing potential Daiwa Scholars.

Carl Randall's work will be featured in the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award 2024

Very many congratulations to Daiwa Scholarships alumnus and artist, Carl Randall. Carl has been selected for the National Portrait Gallery’s new competition, the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award. 50 paintings were chosen from 1,647 entries from 62 countries, exhibiting @NPGLondon11 July – 27 October (followed by UK tour). https://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/exhibitions/2024/hsf-portrait-award
