Author and former Daiwa Foundation grant recipient, Jayne Joso has begun work on a new Japan-inspired work which takes us into the realm of literary fantasy. Supported by Arts Council England, Joso has spent part of the lockdown engaged in the alternate fictional realm of The Water Cats. You can read an exclusive excerpt here.

Maddie Baker, History and Japanese student at the University of Exeter has written about this year’s inaugural London Mural Festival. The Festival featured more than one hundred and fifty artists from around the world. Artist Amanda Chambers returned for a third residency at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in early 2020. “Life in the normally sleepy town of Shigaraki was frenetic. Tourists, excited by a TV drama based on a local potter, had started to visit en masse. The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation awarded a Daiwa Foundation Award to Ravensbourne University’s Department of Architecture to support travel in summer 2019 to Kamaishi in Iwate Prefecture by a group of Architecture students led by Idrees Rasouli (formerly based at Ravensbourne and founder and CEO of X-Crop) and Kate Sedwell from Atlantic Pacific Rescue to collaborate with counterparts in Kamaishi to explore the role of design in responding to mass disaster. The aim was to identify immediate and longer-term needs in Kamaishi.

In March 2019, a Daiwa Foundation Small Grant was awarded to Ellie Robinson-Carter, a Creative Dementia Practitioner, to support “Pass the Baton!” – an international exchange with Takehito Tokuda, a member of the Dementia Friendship Club in Japan. Over the course of this project, Takehito Tokuda visited the UK and Ellie Robinson-Carter travelled to Japan on a research visit.

In autumn 2019, the anthropologist Professor Joy Hendry returned to the village of Kurotsuchi in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan to present and work on historical materials, and to gather data for a final book-length account of her long-term fieldwork in the area.
