Daiwa Scholarship Alumnus Carl Randall (http://www.carlrandall.com/) was recently interviewed by the BBC World Service about his series of Japan paintings. The piece looks at paintings made during his 10-year stay in Tokyo (2003-2013), focusing on his portraits of Japanese people and his portrayal of Tokyo’s crowds.

Carl Randall (Daiwa Scholar 2003) is taking part in an exhibition at Christie’s New York, 23 January to 7 February 2016. Recent large Japan-based ink paintings of his will be exhibited and auctioned at Drawings from the Royal Drawing School – a group exhibition at Christie’s, running alongside Master Drawings Week New York 2016 and a Christie’s Old Master Drawings sale. His work will be exhibited alongside renowned artists such as President of the Royal Academy Christopher Le Brun, and Royal Academician Humphrey Ocean.

Daiwa Scholarship alumnus, Carl Randall’s D-Day veteran portrait painting, commissioned by HRH Prince of Wales for The Royal Collection, will be on exhibition at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, January 15th to March 28th.

Jenny Wright’s illustrations have always been inextricably linked with words – from her captioned Peculiar Men to her tendencies towards book illustrating. By harnessing the written word, Jenny breathes more life into, and adds another dimension to her characters. This exhibition, in contrast, takes a step back and questions the potential of ‘the image as language’. Picture, Letter is on at the St Bride Foundation until 22 November, open Tuesdays – Saturdays during theatre performances (6:30pm – 11pm). World-famous manga artist (or mangaka – 漫画家) Akiko Hatsu (波津 ・彬子) visited London this week, giving a talk at the British Museum in the Japan Galleries. Known for her work in the genre of shojo-manga (少女漫画), Akiko Hatsu was very influential in the development of the genre and also instrumental in coining the term Yaoi.

This London exhibition is Ichijoh Shimotani’s first ever show outside of Japan.
Ichijoh Shimotani is a Japanese Bokusai painter based in Osaka, Japan. Born in Tokushima, Japan, Ichijoh graduated from the The Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1965 and soon discovered her love for painting. In 1974, she ventured into the world of oil painting and has had a presence in the Japanese traditional and modern art scene ever since.

As part of the Barbican’s major new exhibition on artists as collectors (Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector), former Daiwa Scholar, Edmund de Waal is showing the first collection he ever made as a child, containing shells, fossils and architectural fragments, alongside sixty-five Japanese netsuke from the collection given to him by his Uncle Iggie. To draw these historical collections together, Edmund is also exhibiting a work he made in 2011, from the collection of a private man, a biographical work of fifty-seven porcelain vessels held within a vitrine. All three collections will be on public view for the first time. The show is on until 25 May 2015.
